{Leading in crisis – Video 1 of 5, Values}
There’s this great quote about Abraham Lincoln that I love.
“If you wish to know what a man really is, give him power”.
(Note that if you look at the relative success that many countries with female leaders have had dealing with Coronavirus, you could argue that in reality there’s a higher proportion of *women* showing us all how to lead in this crisis.)
Whether we like it or not, we’ve all got some level of power as business leaders. How we use that is a reflection of our values. That’s never more tested or more important than in challenging times.
I’m a believer in the intent of humans. I believe most of us want to do the right thing. But sometimes wanting doesn’t translate into doing.
When it comes to business leaders, I think that disconnect comes mostly from two places.
First, because we allow ourselves to believe that we should pursue unlimited growth and profit, even if (usually unintentionally) it’s at the cost of humanity and environment.
But the second is simply that we don’t realise that it needs additional explicit work and effort to translate them into how our companies work.
When it comes to the core value of being human, here’s one model I’d be looking at in this crisis.
To talk to Iyas about how to protect your business through the crisis and build a stronger and more purposeful one coming out of it, just book a time to chat.
