One of the core responsibilities of a leader, if not \*the\* core responsibility, is to create a work environment where those who want to grow, and are prepared to commit to it, are able to do so.
It doesn’t necessarily need a vast L&D budget (though some is always helpful!). But it \*does\* require a leader who genuinely cares, and who is prepared to listen and pay attention to their team.
It also means striking the balance between stretching the team and supporting them.
Empowering them to make their growth decisions without abrogating your responsibility to guide them, and to align their aspirations with the company’s direction.
Providing an environment for them to flourish, while leaving them with the responsibility of whether they use it.
By some margin, it’s always been a part of my work that I found most fulfilling. And my most resonant memories are always of those who made the most of it.
(With apologies for softer speech on video – the dawn was stunning, but everyone was asleep!)
