Good leadership is a paradox solved by context

Iyas A · May 9, 2022 ·

“10 things all good leaders do”. Nice clickbait, but almost always trite, misleading and written by someone who’s not led their own way out of a paper bag.

Because there’s only one rule that sits above all others for successful leadership.

Consistently successful leaders identify their context, and lead accordingly.

I know. Sounds dull. But it’s real. Context, values and nuance are everything. The “rules” you applied there, won’t apply here. The “rules” someone else applied here are probably not the same ones you should apply here. And the rules themselves are subject to nuance and paradox.

You give direction, but you need to constantly sense how people feel and adjust.

You’re open to being convinced, but you don’t flip-flop on what to do.

You’re authentic to your values, but don’t show every emotion you have.

You’re vulnerable to your humanity, but remain strong in supporting your team and mission.

Context, values and nuance separate you from those who would follow the “10 things a leader must do” lists.

Context is all. Empathy is all.

How's 2023 started for you? Is strategy consistently being executed? Are you not having to firefight or get involved in more deals than you should? We're looking for a group of 5 CEOs (10 to 100 employees) to join us on this workshop to talk through how to make your strategy, purpose and values happen. Join us.
