Do you recruit for cultural or values fit?

Iyas A · May 16, 2023 ·

I’ve interviewed over 1000 people, and \*probably\* recruited over 500.

I used to look for cultural fit when I was recruiting.

I hear this a lot still. And it’s wrong.

The right fit to look for, and the one I eventually learned to look for instead, is a values fit.

Values are what matters – respect, innovation, attention to detail – whatever your values are. I’d get explicit about looking for those when recruiting, rather than cultural fit.

When it comes to culture, then diversity is much more important than fit. I want people who bring different perspectives to the opportunities and challenges we face.

That’s where strength comes from.

And as it happens, values are easier to hire for, to reward for, and yes, to fire for.

So when you recruit, recruit for values fit and cultural diversity. Your company will be far richer for it.
