Be kind in business, and not for the ROI

Be kind in business, and not for the ROI

Iyas A · Dec 14, 2019 ·

Given the current vitriolic and disrespectful state of politics and citizenship in the UK and US, I am worried that we’re in danger of losing kindness as a core value of life and relationships.

So I just did a search for “kindness in business” on Google. And the results were even more depressing. Because almost all of them were making the business case for kindness. For how kindness has a profitable ROI.

Once again, it leaves me wondering why we believe that being kind needs justification in terms of financial return. What if there were no correlation – should we be unkind?

Business is important. It pays for our lives. Its taxes (if paid) fund public services. It drives innovation, much of which has been beneficial to us. It allows us to feed our families. But how we do business isn’t simply about profit – it needs to be more than that.

Business is a human activity. Let’s lead it with the qualities that make us human.
