We don’t find purpose or meaning. We create them.
The beauty and power of that is that it means we get to choose.
Admittedly, in some circumstances, purpose is thrust on us. And our context also shapes our thinking.
But in the end, we choose. (if we choose to!)
One of the conversations I love the most with CEOs, especially founder CEOs, is the one about their company’s purpose. Sometimes it comes to them in a flash – it was always there. Other times it is drawn out over a conversation. They sleep on it.
And then a Eureka happens that ties it all together. Their own personal purpose and how that links to what they’re doing as a company.
It’s a key moment. A moment that comes from asking, from curiosity, from exploration.
And from the bravery of articulating it.
It becomes more real – it becomes a bigger purpose – the more you engage with it. The more you make it happen.
Which is why moving from “why” to “what”, “how” and “with who” are so important.
Doing deepens purpose as it fulfils it.
And we end up creating our purpose rather than finding it.
