Plateaus are insidious. Because although they’re not a good place to be, there’s not so much pain that you rip off the plaster to do something different.
There are some common patterns in most companies that hit The Plateau…
… There’s always a good reason why doing things differently won’t work…
… Or relentless explanations at every turn as to why things haven’t improved…
…Or continued defence of adopted positions rather an openness to doing things differently…
… Or half committing to change, dooming it to failure before we’ve started. Paying lip service to new thinking, so it doesn’t turn into genuine new doing…
… Or “That won’t work (for us)” for anything other than the current way.
But The Plateau is there because we’re doing something the same as we’ve always done it.
To break through it we need to embrace Curiosity and Courage.
– Curiosity to genuinely explore alternatives
– Courage to full-heartedly commit to new
