If you’re a business leader, your leadership will not be defined more clearly than it is right now. How you lead your team will deepen trust. Or shatter it.
We’re facing extreme uncertainty. High stakes. Health AND livelihoods at risk. How do you lead through it?
Most important, lead with your values. And value humanity. Value your team’s health and lives, and ensure you’re not endangering them.
Provide hope. Don’t pretend we’re in anything but perilous times, but start to paint the picture of what can be built on the other side.
If you don’t know what that is, start to figure it out quickly.
Inspire confidence. In times of crisis, people don’t need their leaders to run around like headless chickens. At the risk of attacking a sacred cow, this is not a time to be “vulnerable”. Your team doesn’t need displays of weakness right now.
You can build confidence by figuring out a plan for what you’re going to do.
Be open. You don’t have all the answers, so admit that. But demonstrate how you’ll get to the best answers you can.
Be clear, be visible and over-communicate. Your team needs to hear from you. Even if nothing has changed, tell them that nothing has changed.
And show the light in the darkness.
