Oil consumption is through the floor (sorry – pun intended!).
This is another opportunity for us when we exit lockdown not to pick up on habits that destroy the environment. It will take discipline, but the “pain” of fewer car journeys and flights is far less than the damage they cause. And energy production and storage costs are no longer the issues they used to be for renewables.
As millennials (and a few of us older folk) switch to shared car schemes or cleaner travel, do we really need the amount of oil being extracted? Might this be the trigger for us to clean up, close down the polluting industry and allow the people within it to find work in less damaging areas?
(We might at the same time also send the industry a message not to switch production from petrol to plastics as it’s been doing in a cynical mad rush to get oil out before the tide really turns against it!)
We don’t need to rebuild what went before. We can rebuild better.
